Batman Begins ...
Lawson and I went to see Batman Begins this weekend. I'm not sure how much he liked it, but here are my thoughts:
This movie is divided into two parts; one was good the other was just ok. The first part deals with Bruce Wayne's background and his taking on the persona of Batman. I remember telling Lawson last wednesday, "We don't really need to see another origin story." Even though I initially didn't care to see it, this part of the movie was the better of the two. I was suprised how matter-of-fact the killing of Bruce's parents was shown; no slow motion or symbolic images, just two people getting shot. The reason for this was that the focus wasn't on the act so much as little Bruce's reaction to them. Bruce then goes across the world to learn how to fight (I felt like Indiana Jones for a minute; "Ninjas, Why does it have to be ninjas?"
and then he put together his outfit. The entire story was grounded and almost believable.
Any realism created in the first half of the movie was quickly blown away in the fairly generic second half by a series of choppy edited fight scenes and pointless car chases. Whenever there is any danger to the Bat, we don't see the events from his perspective. Instead we get a clueless looking bad guy walking around, a few milliseconds of choppy editing and dark blurs, and then a shot of the now unconscious bad guy. Boring. You seldom get the feeling that Bruce is actually risking his life. The only thing that saves this half of the movie is a clever choice of villians.
Random Thoughts (look out for Spoilers):
-Please give Batman a suit where he can actually turn his head!
-Liam Neeson's attempt to get Bruce to join his vigilante group was 100 times more convincing that Palpatine's seduction of Vader. In fact, the first half of this script could have easily replaced the middle of RotS making Vader's turn convincing rather than silly.
-If there was a hole in the water main big enough to pour crap in it, water would be shooting out. Its under pressure, remember. Wasn't that the whole point! Plus any microwave that can instantly turn water to steam will do the same to the water in the bodies of all the people standing around. Did all those microwaved wet cats die in vain?
-Yet another franchise suffers from Resident Evil syndrome.
-Batman, The Animated Series still has my favorite Batman origin story.
-I feel sorry for all the out of work fight choreographers. Now, you just need to edit together random images of various bodyparts, shake the camera a bit and your done.
